For the second important step in search engine optimization, our ficticious company "Search Engine Carrots Inc.," their homepage HTML tag content -- keyword tag and description tag -- must match the content of the page search engines (and readers) will crawl.
Here is what Search Engine Carrots Inc.'s original HTML tags read:
|
<html><head> <title>Search Engine Carrots Inc.</title> <meta name="language" CONTENT="English"> <meta name="author" CONTENT="webmaster-at-sec.com"> <meta name="robots" content="index,follow"> <meta name="keyword" CONTENT="the best company, we invented sphondyli, our customers love us, buy vegetables from us, carrots, sphondyli, carrots, sphondyli, carrots, sphondyli, carrots, sphondyli, carrots, sphondyli, carrots!,"> <meta name="COPYRIGHT" CONTENT="2004, 2005"> </head> |
With the current content and tags for Search Engine Carrots Inc., page keyword relevancy to search engine crawls is terrible. The title tag ranks 75 percent (fair,) the description tag is missing, the keywords relevancy is 22 percent (terrible.) It is amazing that they appear as high as result No.67!
Now, lets look at how the tags should read:
|
<html><head> <title>Carrot Source </title> <meta name="language" CONTENT="English"> <meta name="author" CONTENT="webmaster-at-sec.com"> <meta name="robots" content="index,follow"> <meta name="keyword" CONTENT="carrots, sliced, diced, bunched, call, order, overnight,"> plus.... |
In Search Engine Carrot's original tags, the description tag is missing.
|
<meta name="description" CONTENT="Call us your Carrot
Source. "> <meta name="COPYRIGHT" CONTENT=" 2004, 2005"> </head> |
Title, keyword, and description tags each (now) meet a relevancy rate of 100 percent.
With the new tags and content ready to go -- push the pages live. Depending upon how often the search engines crawl in order for the new changes to take effect, hold firm and tell the marketing man he will have to wait a few weeks until keywords kick in.
A note on keywords; keep them tied to the content on your page and don't exceed 20 keywords. Do not repeat keywords, they will be ignored. Tie the description tag, keyword tag, title tag, and your page content title to the same terms. It does not mean they must all be the same, make sure your main goal is mentioned in each of those structures.
